When I was just starting to work on my thesis for my Masters Degree at Antioch University, I had an opportunity to meet Ralph Kilmann and hear him talk about his book Quantum Organizations which, in early 2002, had just been published (see link under Best Books). In his book, Ralph talks about taking an integral approach to personal and organizational transformation. By bringing spirituality back into the workplace he believes leaders can create work environments where people find purpose and create meaning.
Many physicians and other healthcare professionals have lost touch with the reasons they went into medicine in the first place. Many are feeling frustrated and uninspired. When I'm uncertain of which path to take, I step back and refocus on my purpose - both my immediate purpose and my overarching life purpose. Taking time to do this helps me get back on track and stay energized. I think this is an important skill for physicians to master and I think we could definitely do a better job of teaching young physicians how to do this.
